Out of production for decades, the Featherston RE chair has been relaunched in 2022. Originally manufactured in 1957 by Kennett Bros & Raynor pty ltd, the RE chair was featured in the Featherston Contract Interiors collection. This was the first time Featherston separated the seat and back shells. On the slender but strong metal frame, this creates the illusion the backrest is floating, whilst the extension of the backrest support under the seat add rigidity to the chair. Now produced in Australia under license by Gordon Mather Industries to the original specifications, the Featherston RE Chair (c.1957) is manufactured from a solid metal rod with a powder coat finish. Contoured ply seat and backrest are fully upholstered using commercial grade foam and finished with top stitch detailing.

Suitable as an occasional, dining or desk chair the arm rest will neatly tuck under a table or desk top.

Grant Featherston (1922–1995) was an Australian furniture designer whose chair designs in the 1950s became icons of the Atomic Age. Born in Geelong, Victoria, Featherston was a self-taught designer who worked in lighting and glass panels before specializing in furniture. Featherston went against the trends of the time to create utterly unexpected designs. And, whilst many designers can be credited with innovative and unique furniture designs, few can take credit for developing new forms and shapes in the way Grant Featherston did. Today, Featherston’s furniture remains in high demand at public auctions. His style has become renowned not only as an exceptional piece of furniture, but also as works of art.
